Walmart announced in May that hundreds of remote workers at the company's headquarters in Bentonville, Arkansas, as well as other locations in Hoboken, New Jersey, and Northern California would be required to work in person. A new Bloomberg report shows that employees in a company-wide Zoom call resisted the return-to-office (RTO) mandate, and some decided to quit.
In the call, one participant said the RTO policy was “a bunch of bullshit,” and others raised concerns about living in Arkansas, child care, increased workloads and the impact of the move on their partners' jobs.

A Walmart employee told Bloomberg he decided to leave the company rather than relocate in the short term.
Walmart's human resources chief Donna Morris told the newspaper that the majority of employees had chosen to return to the office. Employees had to notify Walmart by July 1 if they planned to move and make the move by Oct. 31.
Employees who cannot make the change will have to leave the company between August 2024 and January 2025, according to Bloomberg.

Walmart isn't the only company implementing a strict RTO policy. Salesforce announced last month that employees in all departments must come into the office, weeks after laying off 300 employees. Bank of America threatened “disciplinary action” for employees who didn't attend the office in person.

Dell asked its employees to return to the office and said those who didn't would not be promoted. In May, Dell began tracking employee IDs and announced that this metric would be considered in employee evaluations, rewards and compensation.
A survey conducted by Bamboo HR in July found that top managers secretly hoped that RTO policies would encourage employees to leave and lead to voluntary turnover. Bamboo HR referred to RTOs as “disguised layoffs.”
