Hurricane Helene hit the Big Bend region of Florida as a Category 4 hurricane with winds of 140 miles per hour. So far 22 deaths have been reported. And although there was widespread flooding, including in the densely populated cities of Tampa and St. Petersburg, Tampa General Hospital, located directly on Tampa Bay, was able to remain dry.

That's because of a 5- to 10-foot barrier called the AquaFence that's going viral on multiple platforms for apparently protecting the region's only Level 1 trauma center.

As #HurricaneHelene continues, the AquaFence at TGH remains steadfast. The waterproof barrier is designed to withstand storm surges of up to 15 feet. It has endured several rainfall events to prevent rainwater from affecting hospital operations. #WeAreTGH #StormWatch pic.twitter.com/papsd6oPg2

AquaFence was founded in 1999 and has offices in Norway and New Jersey. According to the company's website, its systems “protect more than $30 billion in real estate in the United States alone,” including everything from hotels to gas stations to Shake Shack.

The product is designed to be installed quickly and (fairly) easily. In 2023, Thomas Briedis, president of AquaFence USA, told local outlet WTSP Tampa 10 that 100 feet of AquaFence can be installed in 30 minutes.

“They come folded up, a bit like a laptop,” he said. “You take them out of the box, put them down and they open up.”

Briedis also said the company is working on a line of residential AquaFences that will cost about $20,000. The barriers are intended to provide protection from a Category 5 hurricane.

“We have great confidence in the system. It has been thoroughly tested,” Briedis told the outlet.
