Google got ahead of Apple and launched new smartphones with AI.
At the Made By Google event on Tuesday, Google punctuated the release of the Pixel 9 with celebrity appearances and jabs at Apple. Keke Palmer and NBA All-Star Jimmy Butler took the stage and Google executives demonstrated what the Pixel camera can do.
At the event, Google unveiled four new Pixel phones that feature Google's own AI assistant, Gemini: the $799 Pixel 9, the $999 Pixel 9 Pro, the $1,099 Pixel 9 Pro XL, and the $1,799 Pixel 9 Pro Fold, which folds out into an 8-inch tablet.

The Pixel 9 is Google's first lineup to ship fully with Gemini Nano's multimodality, meaning users can access the AI assistant via voice, text, code, image and video. Users don't need to have a network connection to access Gemini Nano, and the Pixel 8 Pro released last year uses the same system.
The Made By Google event is usually held in October, but moving it to August, a month before Apple's expected iPhone release, could be Google's attempt to outshine Apple, Bloomberg mused.
Apple is reportedly launching Apple Intelligence this fall, bringing AI to the iPhone 15 Pro, Pro Max, and all new iPhones. The new upcoming phones could prompt Apple's existing user base to upgrade their old iPhones for AI features.
Apple currently dominates the $61.5 billion US smartphone market. The iPhone has a market share of 58.81 percent and the Google Pixel has 4.6 percent.
What can Google’s AI really do?
Google has brought AI to the tasks people use their phones for, like checking the weather. For example, the new Pixel Weather app offers an AI weather report, while Call Notes provides AI-generated transcriptions of phone calls that are stored on the phone rather than in the cloud for security reasons.
Pixel Screenshots saves phone screenshots in a separate app so users can search through them using AI and not lose them in their camera roll. Pixel Studio's image generator creates new images instantly, and Google demonstrated how to use the app to create party invitations.

In Google's pre-event ad, Gemini was asked to write a breakup letter and start it with “Dear old iPhone.”
But the first Gemini demo took three attempts to work. Nevertheless, Google used this as an opportunity to strike another blow against Apple by emphasizing that it was a live demo – a reference to Apple's pre-recorded demos.
Google also claimed that the Pixel 9 has the “world's first AI-powered camera” and compared a photo taken with the new Pixel 9 Pro XL with the iPhone 15 Pro Max, without mentioning Apple by name.
